Sport 40 models are semi scale replicas of Formula one aircraft and must comply with the rules laid down by SARA. Sport Air Racing Association. There are many different designs to choose from, just take a look at some of the full size aircraft sites in the (links) page. Find a design you like and build, although most Sport 40 competitors will build from kit or part kits, generally you will not find pylon race kits at the local model shops, again take a look through the suppliers listed in (Links) you will find every part needed and some you don't, or down load a copy of the Steve Wheeler Nemesis plan to get a starting point.

Stinger

One of the most popular designs is the Stinger. The full size was designed by Art Williams and was first flown in 1971, by John Paul Jones who reached speeds of 223mph. The plane is still flown today by new owner Deke Slayton.

A Stinger kit with a well-designed glass fiber fuz, balsa tail surfaces and a foam wing, will cost about the same as a wot4 to build, anyone having built a wot4 would put the main parts together very quickly. The wing although foam with balsa covering, has to have two spars fitted and plenty of glass cloth to give it the strength needed to make tight turns safely. It's not unusual to see an odd wing break or two in a year, so make them strong. Glass clothing a wing for the first time can seem like a major challenge, but in truth its quite simple. See R/C Model World January 2002, Glassing-McCurry's way by Pat McCurry.

Bummers Bullet

One of the latest designs to become available in part or full kit, the Bullet is very suited to the most powerful sport40 motors. Construction is very similar to the models used in, F3D, with ailerons using the top wing skin as a hinge giving a better air flow over the wing, plus the use of two servos one for each aileron gives more control and strength. The rudder fin is molded as part of the pre-coloured fuselage, you can also have the firewall fitted at the molding stage, and all of this makes for easy construction. In fact there is not a lot more work than you would expect from something like a Kyosho ARFT. Contact ATS Mayneline Products for more info.

Power Plants

Sport 40 class engine rules are. An engine must not cost more than £130 and be of .40 cu in, with two exceptions. First the Irvine 46 ABC mk3 fitted with a mini pipe may be used as in the Quiet Quickie class, this set up gives enough power with a good carburetor keeping things under control, this has two benefits, one it makes trimming less stressfull, plus you will not look out of place flying the model on a club site.

The other exception is the Dubb Jett SARA 40. This motor is no longer available for under £130, due to the price being governed by the exchange rate at the time of sale. The quality of this motor is excellent, with race winning potential and reliability straight from the box, plus a good range of accessories. The motor can be run with carburetor or venture and fuel cut off, I would recommend the carburetor, at least first time out with any new model.

Other motors being used are, MVVS, ROSSI and Super Tigre Q500, in limited numbers. The MVVS and ROSSI just don't seem to have power needed at the moment. The Super Tigre has plenty of power on a good day but falls down on reliability.
